CHRIS DEERING

Chris Deering has over 25 years experience in the Multinational FMCG business, with 10 years as the helm of Columbia Tristar International Video and 10 years as President of Sony Computer Entertainment - Europe [ PlayStation ] He was President of Sony Electronics in Europe as well, from 2003-2005. A Harvard MBA, and a McKinsey alumnus, Chris had various marketing management roles at Gillette International and VP of International Marketing with the original Atari Video Games business in California. Now serving as Chairman of Codemasters Chris is also on many high tech firm advisory boards, including Textappeal, and chairs the annual Edinburgh Interactive Festival.

Speakers’ biographies:

APO H. DEMIRTAS

Apo Demirtas joined the Jumeirah Group in September 2007 in the capacity of Chief Sales & Marketing Officer. In his role, he is responsible for Sales, Marketing, Brand Management & Strategy, Distribution, PR & Corporate Communications, Revenue Management and Market Strategy for the group. He began his hotel management career 24 years ago as a student at a Hotel Management Vocational High School. His first position was Page-Boy at the age of 15. Prior to joining the Jumeirah Group, Apo was based in Atlanta, Georgia, where he held the position of Vice President Market Strategy for InterContinental Hotels Group, Americas. In his role, he was responsible for the channel marketing, sales, distribution and revenue management strategies for the company’s managed hotels. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel Management. Subsequently, he earned his Master’s degree in 1995 from Florida International University School of Hotel Management. With a Ph.D work in Microeconomics & Marketing in Hotel Management and extensive experience in the operations, sales, marketing and revenue management fields of the hospitality industry, Apo has great expertise and invaluable international perspective. Prior to his time with InterContinental Hotels Group, Apo worked in several senior sales, marketing and revenue management positions with high profile international hospitality businesses including Hilton Hotels Corporation and Cendant Corporation.

HAZEL KAY

GLOBAL MARKETING DIRECTOR

Hazel joined American Express in the late 80's and began her career creating marketing communications for the Green and Gold cards in London and Paris. This provided an exceptional introduction to the world of big brands and higher net worth consumers, and an excellent foundation in direct marketing and database management. A move to the burgeoning telecoms industry followed when Hazel launched the third national UK telecoms brand, Energis to the UK market. In 1995 Hazel joined the De Beers Group and started a very long, successful love affair with diamonds as Marketing Director for Europe, then Head of Global Brand development working with the global luxury jewellery and watch brands, and eventually Marketing Director for the USA. In June 2008 Hazel joined Vertu as the Global Marketing Director and now balances a love of diamonds and quality with a fascination for the new and a passion for building a luxury brand for the future.

STEVE WHEELER

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT ADVERTISING, EMIRATES GROUP

Steve is currently SVP Advertising at Emirates, a USD 12 billion diversified travel group based in Dubai. Steve is responsible for all aspects of Advertising across Emirates Group brands, including Emirates, Emirates Holidays, SkyCargo, Hotels & Resorts, Skywards and a variety of other divisions and business ventures. He leads a multi-cultural team of marketing specialists and a large agency network across the 100 countries where the Emirates brand is active. Steve has been with Emirates since 1995 and progressed through a variety of roles in the Corporate Communications division. Before joining Emirates Steve worked in the marketing department of British Midland Airways in the UK. Steve has a joint degree in Economics and Geography from Swansea University and a Postgraduate Degree in marketing from Bristol Business School, UK. Steve sits on the Chief Marketing Officer advisory board, contributes to the Brand Council of the World Economic Forum and is involved in a variety of other international marketing groups such as the IAA and WFA.
